Abstract

As antibiotic resistance has increased, prompted scientists to search for a secure and efficient substitute for antibiotics. The potential benefits of phage therapy target multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) for example A.baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E.coli. In the present study, new phages ФEAP, ФEPP, and ФEEP were characterized and tested in vitro against A.baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E.coli. ФEEP is a member of the Siphoviridae family and has a broad range of hosts, extreme heat, and pH, salinity tolerance, and resistance to UV rays. In addition, phages show very active lytic towards MDR E. coli. ФEAP belongs to the Myoviridae relatives with a broad range of hosts, extreme heat, and pH, salinity tolerance, and resistance to UV rays. As well as phages show very active lytic towards MDR A.baumannii. ФEPP belongs to the Podoviridae relatives with a broad range of hosts, extreme heat, and pH, salinity tolerance, and resistance to UV rays. In addition, phages show very active lytic towards MDR Pseudomonas. aeruginosa.
The therapeutic efficacy of ФEAP only was evaluated in a mouse model of a complete wound that acquired an infection of A.baumannii. Phage-treated wounds inoculated with ФEAP demonstrated full regeneration, high-quality wound healing, and elimination of bacteria with infection. All of those characteristics combine to ФEAP phage a potential treatment for infections of skin wounds by MDR A.baumannii. Nevertheless, additional investigation and clinical research studies on the phage combinations that are needed to be applied topically in wound infections must be conducted.
