The main objective of the current study is to reveal the relationship of psychological resilience with exam anxiety and sleep disorders among a sample of university students. Therefore, the study aimed to address the following questions:
1 - What is the extent and direction of the relationship between psychological resilience and exam anxiety among a sample of university students?
2- What is the extent and direction of the relationship between psychological resilience and sleep disorders among a sample of university students?
3- What is the extent and direction of the relationship between exam anxiety and sleep disorders among a sample of university students?
4- Are there differences between males and females in each of psychological resilience, exam anxiety and sleep disorders?
5- Are there significant differences in each of psychological resilience, exam anxiety, and sleep disorders according to the difference in gender, academic specialization, and the interaction between them?
6- What is the extent of the contribution of psychological resilience, sleep disorders, gender, and academic specialization in predicting the level of exam anxiety among university students?
Therefore, the study relied on the comparative descriptive approach, in order to describe the sample community in terms of the study variables, then study the correlations between them, followed by a comparison between students by gender and academic specialization, followed by an exploration of the role of each of gender, psychological resilience, and sleep disorders in predicting anxiety the exam.
The sample of the study consisted of (502) male and female students from 6 October University from the Faculties of Education, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Applied Arts, and the Faculty of Politics and Economics from various academic teams, and the age ranged between 17 and 29 years, and the mean age in the sample was (19.94) years, and the standard deviation (1.53) years old.
The psychological resilience scale prepared by Yung, Connor, the exam anxiety scale prepared by Sarason, and the sleep disorders scale developed by Khaled Mohamed Abdel-Ghany were applied, after they were modified to meet the requirements of the study and the sample. This was done by means of a collective questionnaire on small groups of sample members in the classrooms half an hour before the end of the lectures. The SPSS statistical software package for social sciences (version 28) was used in order to perform the appropriate statistical analyzes for the objectives of the study.
The study revealed the following results:
1- There is a direct and significant correlation between test anxiety and sleep disorders in males and females
2- There is an inverse and significant correlation between psychological resilience with its subcomponents and test anxiety in both males and females.
3- There is an inverse and significant correlation between psychological resilience with its subcomponents and sleep disorders in both males and females.
4- There are significant differences between males and females in psychological resilience and its sub-dimensions in the direction of males, and in each of test anxiety and sleep disorders in the direction of females.
5- There are no differences in psychological resilience according to the type of academic specialization. However, there is a significant interaction between gender and academic specialization in determining the level of psychological resilience. It was found that male students from practical colleges are more psychologically resilient than females from the same major, on the other hand the females from theoretical colleges are more psychologically resilient than females from practical colleges.
6- There are significant difference in exam anxiety between students of practical colleges and students of theoretical colleges in the direction of the first group. There is no effect of the interaction between gender and academic specialization in determining the level of test anxiety.
7- There are no differences in sleep disorders between practical colleges and theoretical colleges.
8- Sleep disturbance is the main predictor of exam anxiety, followed by a low level of psychological resilience and female gender in the case of practical colleges.
These results were discussed according to the order of hypotheses in the light of each of the previous studies and the theoretical framework and psychological logic, followed by practical and research recommendations derived from the current study and its results.
