Abstract

The present study was carried out at private poultry farm under supervision of Animal Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Tanta University from October to December 2020, to investigate the effect of turmeric supplementation levels on broilers performance, physiological status and economic efficiency. Experimental Design: Three hundred and seventy five one-day-old unsexed Ross broilers chicks were used in this experiment. Birds were individually weighed to the nearest gram and randomly distributed into five equal experimental groups; with three replicates of 25 chicks each. Chicks were grown in floor pens and reared under similar managerial and hygienic conditions. During the experimental period some productive and physiological indices were studied. Dietary treatment groups evaluated included: Control Basal diet without any supplementation. T1 Basal diet supplemented with 0.25 % of Turmeric. T2 Basal diet supplemented with 0.50 % of Turmeric. T3 Basal diet supplemented with 0.75 % of Turmeric. T4 Basal diet supplemented with 1.00 % of Turmeric. Obtained results could be summarized as follows: 1- Generally, at the end of the experimental periods (five week of age) body weights of broiler chicken fed diet supplemented with turmeric powder at the level of 0.5, 0.75 and 1% significantly (P≤0.01) increased by 11.54, 10.18 and 9.40%, respectively, as compared to that of the control. 2- At the end of experimental period, results showed that highest total body weight gain values (2040.77, 2015.38 and 2001.11g) yielded by birds received dietary turmeric powder at the levels of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 % followed by 1905.3g of those received 0.25% compared to control group, respectively. 3- The amount of weekly feed consumption were significantly (p≤0.05) decreased for groups treated with different levels of turmeric powder compared to the control group. Broiler received diet supplemented with turmeric at the level of 0.25% significantly (p≤0.05) had the lowest amount of weekly feed consumption from the 3ed to 5th week of the experimental period. 4- Feed conversion ratio was significantly improved for birds received dietary turmeric powder during all experimental period. At the end of the experimental period, the improvement of feed conversion ratio ranged between 10.60 and 16.84 % of birds received 0.25 and 0.5% dietary turmeric powder, compared to the control group. 5- Survivability of broiler chick significantly (P≤0.05) improved due to dietary turmeric at different supplementation level from 0.25 up to 1%. 6- No significant (P>0.05) differences were observed between all treatments for the relatives weight of liver, heart, and kidney. On the other hand, there were significant (P≤0.05) effects for the relative weight of carcass, abdominal fat, bursa, spleen, and thymus between broilers received diet supplemented with different levels of turmeric powder. A significant (P≤0.05) increasing in the relative weights of carcass, spleen, and bursa was observed with the increase in the supplementation level of turmeric powder in the diet of broiler chickens from 0.25 up to 1%. 7- The relative weight of thymus was significantly (P≤0.05) decreased by 8.9, 25.0, 26.87, and 28.57% for broiler received diet supplemented with 0.5, 0.75, and 1% turmeric powder respectively, compared to those fed control diet. Also, broiler received diet supplemented with 0.75% turmeric powder had significantly (P≤0.05) the lowest relative abdominal fat weight by 35.93%, as compared to the control. 8- No significant (p>0.05) differences between all treatments for the concentration of total protein, albumin, globulin, Total cholesterols, and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) were observed. While, the activity of ALT and AST enzymes were significantly (P≤0.01) decreased by increasing supplementation level of turmeric powder from 0.25 up to 1% in broiler diet. Similarly, the concentration of triglycerides and LDL were significantly (P≤0.01) decreased by increasing supplementation level turmeric powder from 0.25 up to 1% in broiler diet. On the other hand, HDL-cholesterol was significantly (P≤0.01) increased by increasing supplementation level of turmeric powder from 0.25 up to 1% in broiler diet. 9- Birds fed the turmeric powder-supplemented diet had the highest plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the lowest plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) activity. 10- broiler chicks fed diet supplemented with 0.5% turmeric powder had the highest relative economic efficiency followed by those received 0.75% turmeric powder and then those fed diet supplemented with 0.25% turmeric powder by 40.75, 31.47, and 25.33% , respectively, compared to control.
