Abstract

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignant disorder of the blood characterized by impaired differentiation of hematopoietic precursor cells, resulting in abnormal accumulation of immature precursors and suppression of growth and maturation of cells involved in normal hematopoiesis. It is a clonal disease with a highly heterogeneous biology. Interleukin 35 (IL-35), a cytokine mainly produced by regulatory T cells (Treg cells), is composed of an Epstein-Barr virus3 induced gene 3 ³-chain and an IL-12 p35 ³-chain. IL-35 causes tumorigenicity in cancer, protects cancer cells against apoptosis, and facilitates cancer progression. However, a few reports have referred to its contradictory roles in cancer prevention. Therefore, the exact purpose of this cytokine in cancer development has become a fundamental question that needs to be answered. The purposes of the present study are to measure the serum level of IL 35 and assess its role in patients with acute myeloid leukemia. The study included 50 patients with newly diagnosed AML and 50 healthy individuals served as control group; the age and sex were matched between cases and controls. The patients were 34 males and 16 females with age ranged from 23 to 74 years.
