Abstract

Linguistic aggression is worth studying because it has notably become a prevailing phenomenon in every day communication. Interpersonal conversations on different social networks and in different communicative situations display a good deal of linguistic aggression represented, for example, in insulting, shouting or reproaching. Media discourse example, in insulting, shouting or reproaching. Media discourse in T.V. daily talk shows is virtually aggressive. A quick look at comment boards in the networks of social communication reveals that verbal fighting has become the only way of expression. Thus, the present research focuses on the phenomenon of delivering aggression by the use of the linguistic resources.
Within the framework of linguistics, attacking the other linguistically is a phenomenon that falls in the interest domain of pragmatics. Speech Act theory is the pragmatic theory chosen to be the basis of the study. The study utilizes the findings of the SAT on the level of the linguistic / textual analysis. In order to expand the linguistic analysis to include the contextual factors that contribute to the production and the uptake of the aggressive utterances, the SAT is integrated with a wider theory of discourse, i.e. the context Models theory (CMT) of Van Dijk.
Some examples of communicative utterances are chosen randomly from different genres of communication, for example, from computer mediated communication (CMC), T.V. talk shows and documentary scripts. The utterances are analyzed textually using the SAT tools of analysis , and contextually (using the CMT tools of analysis). Both levels of analysis present and investigation of the phenomenon of linguistic aggression from two integrating perspectives. The first is a pragmatic perspective that deals with the aggressive utterance as a type of speech acts. The second is a socio-cognitive discoursal perspective that deals with the social and the cognitive factors that contribute to the production and up take of this type of utterances.
The study consists of five chapters. The first chapter gives the lay out of the study, presents a survey of the related studies and explores the notion of linguistic aggression in the fields of psychology, sociology and culture. The second chapter is the theoretical framework of the study.
The chapter is divided into two parts. Part one explores the main concepts of the speech act theory. Part two displays van Dijk’s context models theory. Chapter three investigates the speech act of aggression in the colloquial Arabic and chapter four investigates it in English. The fifth chapter is dedicated to summing the study up. The findings are stated and the recommendations for further studies are suggested.
