Abstract

Burns are one of the most feared and misunderstood destructive form of injury severely endangering the life and health of human tissue. Advances in burn care have greatly increased survival rates; however, burn survivors are left scarred after recovery that alter a person’s appearance in many ways.
Post burn scars are supposed to be a dermal fibrotic disorder where red, raised, pruritic lesions distort the skin burn scar are cosmetically disfiguring and force the scarred person to deal with an alteration in the body appearance, resulting in delayed return to work and reintegration into the society.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an endogenous therapeutic technology that is gaining interest in regenerative medicine due to its potential to stimulate and accelerate tissue healing. PRP is defined as an autologous biological product derived from the patient’s blood, and in which after a centrifugation process a plasma fraction is obtained with a platelet concentration higher than that in circulating blood.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains abundant amount of growth factors that play an important role in wound healing, through stimulation of angiogenesis, re-epithelization, matrix formation, and re-modeling and is chemotactic and mitotic agents for fibroblasts and endothelial cells. The basic rationale is to mimic the natural ways of healing, bringing to the injury site a set of molecules that will accelerate the functional recovery of the tissue and repair of damaged areas.
Autologous PRP injection is a safe process, applicable even at outpatient clinic, repeatable and reproducible technique that doesn’t require post injection precautions such as avoidance of sun exposure which may interfere with patient usual habits like laser therapy or dermabrasion.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of injecting platelets rich plasma in modulating the post burn scars at different stages.
This was a prospective study, was conducted at al Menoufia University Hospital and Ras al teen hospital on 48 patients divided into 3 groups: (group I): included 16 patients from day zero till 4th weeks of burn, (group II): included 16 patients from 4th weeks till the 12 th week of burn, (group III): included 16 patients from 12th weeks till the 6 th month of burn.
