Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effect of laser surface treatment of both canal walls and glass fiber posts on
their bond strength.
Materials and Methods: Forty extracted single-rooted permanent human teeth were decoronated
and endodontically treated. Post space of 10 mm length was prepared to receive glass fiber post. Teeth
were randomly divided into 4 groups based on the surface treatment used as follows; group ACC
(Control): post space was irrigated using standard irrigation protocol (5 ml 5.25% NaOCl+10 ml
distilled water+5 ml of 17% EDTA+10 ml distilled water) and post surface received conventional
silane treatment, group BLC: post space was irradiated with Er:YAG laser and post surface received
conventional silane treatment, group CCL: post space was irrigated using standard irrigation protocol
and post surface was treated with Er:YAG laser followed by silane application, group DLL: both
tooth and post received laser treatment. The posts were then cemented with self-adhesive resin
cement. Three slices were prepared for each sample and push-out test was done using a universal
testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min.
Results: Statistical analysis showed that, regarding different root levels: all groups showed
insignificant difference between all sections (P > 0.05) except group ACC, in which the middle section
showed significantly higher bond strength value than cervical (P < 0.05). When comparing all groups
together, there was no significant difference between all groups in the middle section, while in
cervical and apical sections, all the groups tested showed a statistically significant difference, as group
DLL was the highest (17.15 ± 3.31), group ACC was the lowest (12.47 ± 2.17), with no significant
difference between group BLC and group CCL.
Conclusion: Er:YAG laser treatment for both tooth and post can be used as an alternative method to
enhance the bond strength of adhesively luted glass fiber post compared to conventional treatment.
