Abstract

The present study deals with the most suitable conditions for production of calanoid copepod Paracartia grani to be used as alternative live feed in larviculture. For proper treatment of the subject, it was necessary to study the life cycle, generation time and life span of the species and the optimum conditions for mass production of P.grani. These conditions involved biotic and abiotic factors (i.e. food, temperature, salinity, photoperiods and pH) on the growth and production of P.grani. The effect of mono-, binary and tri-algal diets combinations of the three microalgal species Isochrysis galbana, Nannochloropsis oceanica and Tetraselmis chuii on the growth performance of P. grani culture was examined. The effects of temperature, salinity, photoperiod and pH on egg production, egg hatching, naupliar survival and developmental rates of P. grani under controlled laboratory conditions were examined. Cultured P. grani was analyzed to estimate their biochemical composition. The percentage of water (wet weight), ash, protein, lipid, carbohydrate, amino acids and fatty acids contents of P. grani were estimated. The results of this study was discussed in view of published results on the same subject dealt with. Based on this work it is recommended that P. grani is a valid candidate for use in aquaculture industry because of its high reproductive performance, fast development, wide range of tolerance to environmental conditions and high nutritional values, etc.
