Abstract

This study aimed to identify neuro-architecture principles in the interior environment of healthcare facilities, which has been shown in several studies to have positive effects on the mental and physio-psychological state of facility users, as well as to facilitate navigation and reduce stress levels.
It was also agreed that applying these ideas in healthcare settings improves ecovery rates and shortens patients’ hospital stays. The research was conducted in two phases; the first phase, typologies employed in evidence-based design research (EBD) were used to define neuro-architecture design principles for the interior environment of healthcare facilities. In the second phase, qualitative research was conducted to determine how computational methods may be applied to the neuro-interior design concepts. To evaluate the application of the selected principles through case studies, comparative analytic study was performed.
The research aimed to develop computational tools to facilitate the incorporation of these principles into a healthcare facility’s interior environment. The focus of the research was on planning and navigation concepts, and three computational methodologies were developed to aid in the computational and numerical analysis, design, and evaluation of healthcare facility environments.
One of the techniques consisted of using space syntax analysis to identify spatial characteristics that indicate the use of specific neuro-architecture principles in the inpatient ward of a healthcare facility.
Along the journey of a user with no prior familiarity with the location, a number of criteria associated with the placement of signage and manifest cues were retained by means of parametric design strategies.
In addition, a computational model for evaluating healthcare facility spaces on the basis of spatial qualities such as accessibility and permeability parameters, which represent the application of some neuro-architecture concepts, is also presented.
