Abstract

Shaping user satisfaction is very important for achieving sustainability in buildings. Thus, monitoring user satisfaction during the operational phase is as crucial as monitoring energy consumption. However, the conventional approach to user satisfaction assessment costs a lot of money, effort, and time, which prevents it from occurring frequently and providing the greatest benefit. Moreover, the objectivity of the conventional approach is influenced by some psychological concepts and social settings, such as autonomy, adaptation, forgiveness, etc. Thus, the main aim of this thesis is to develop a user satisfaction assessment model based on the time parameter in order to achieve the sustainable management in the operational process. This model was designed to overcome the hindrances behind the infrequency occurrence of user satisfaction assessment and building performance evaluation. The research also focuses on understanding the current functional performance of government buildings and identifying the influential weight of each of the functional attributes in influencing the user’s overall satisfaction and well-being. Those weights help architects understand and arrange the priorities of the functional parameters in the decision-making process for both the design and renovation of buildings. The research relies on a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology. The data was collected from three government case study buildings in Cairo, Egypt by means of in-depth interviews, web-based questionnaires, and walk-through. While it was analyzed by excel, and SPSS statistical software. The study examines the correlation between the functional attributes and the overall satisfaction of end-users through SPSS software. Results reveal that circulation, space configuration, and furniture distribution and quality have a critical significance correlation with the overall satisfaction degree (r > 0.2), while parking and space identification recorded an insignificant correlation (r < 0.2), which means that this factor did not indeed affect the perception of end-user towards the building. While the model investigates the ability of the time parameter to monitor user satisfaction and building performance. The results show that the time parameter is a good indicator of the user’s satisfaction with 60% accuracy.
