Abstract

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most prevalent known mycotoxins (secondary fungal metabolic products), it commonly contaminates maize and other types of crops during production, harvest, storage and processing. It affects human and animals by eating Aflatoxin contaminated foods, ingestion of contaminated dairy products or by inhaling dust particles of AFB1.
Turmeric has been used for 4,000 years to treat a variety of conditions. It may help in fighting infections and some cancers, reducing inflammation, and potentially in treating digestive problems. Moreover, it has gotten a lot of press regarding its antioxidizing effect.
In this study, we aimed to figure out the possible protective effect of turmeric against brain Aflatoxicosis.
In order to achieve our goal, adult albino rats were divided into 4 groups (group 1: Negative control, group 2: Positive control (DMSO-treated group), group 3: Aflatoxin-treated group, group 4: Aflatoxin and Turmeric-treated group). AFB1 was intraperitoneally injected and turmeric was orally administrated. One month after treatment, rats were sacrificed for laboratory analysis. Serological analysis of total NSE (Neuron Specific Enolase) levels was performed to determine the neurotoxic effect of AFB1. Then histological examination was carried out to investigate the architectural alterations in cerebral cortex of the rat’s brain.
