Several attempts have appeared in Azerbaijan to integrate Arabic music with elements derived from jazz music in the twentieth century by the Azerbaijani composer Rafiq Babayv and pianist Vagif Mustafazadeh, which led to the emergence of Azerbaijani jazz or what is called (jazz - maqam).
Azerbaijanis inherit a valuable collection of classical singing called “Mugami”, which is a musical form bearing the same Arabic word “maqam” and it must be distinguished from the familiar meaning of the word, i.e. “Magami scale”. Rast, the maqam al-Bayati (Bayati Shiraz), and also the chargah, shur, hamyun, and this musical heritage is found in the republics of Central Asia: Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. Music has always been an important entry point to learn the secrets of peoples and their culture, and our Arabic picks have a share in the formation of world music, and we find in this context a unique spiritual coherence and harmony that links our music with its Azerbaijani counterpart.
Azerbaijani music was built on folk music that dates back nearly 1000 years. Azerbaijani music developed through elegy through the creation of diverse, balanced melodies. Azerbaijani music was divided beside the maqam into two different types: Ashyg and Megana. The lover art is an art that combines music and poetry. As for the megana, it is a type of traditional Azeri folk music that is performed by several people on the improvisation, This is in addition to the classical music that flourished in Azerbaijan in 1920 after the founding of the Baku Conservatory to teach Western music. In addition to their use of Arabic maqamats without quarter tones, and Azerbaijani music is a mixture of Turkish, Iranian and Arabic origins, which makes it one of the music of Islamic civilization.
