Abstract

Leontodon hispidulus Boiss. (L. hispidulus) is a rare wild plant growing in the
Egyptian North Coast. It belongs to the family Asteraceae which is known for its
wide variety of active constituents and biological activities. Few work was traced
concerning L. hispidulus. Other species of the same genus proved to contain active
phenolic compounds and terpenes, and possess anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic as
well as antioxidant activities. In the present study, HPLC, LC-qTOF-MS profiling
and GC/MS profiling of fatty acids and hydrocarbons were all performed for the
first time on this plant. HPLC analysis of the ethanolic extract of L. hispidulus
aerial parts revealed that phenolic acids (p-coumaric, chlorogenic, caffeic, vanillic
and protocatechuic) and flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol) were the most
abundant phenolic compounds. LC-qTOF-MS profiling of the ethanolic extract
allowed the identification of various flavonoids and their glycosides including
luteoline, kaempferol, quercetin, apigenin, naringenin, formononetin and acacetin,
as well as different phenolic acids as chlorogenic, rosmarinic, coumaric,
hydroxybenzoic and caffeic acids. Coumarines as dihydroxycoumarin, daphnetin
and esculin were also detected.
