Abstract

To investigate the effect of incentive spirometry training on ventilatory functions of children with spastic cerebral palsy. Forty children with spastic cerebral palsy (diplegia and hemiplegia) from both sexes aged between 6-12 years were randomly assigned into two groups of equal number: the control group and the study group. The control group consisted of 16 boys and 4 girls, while the study group consisted of 17 boys and 3 girls. The control group performed selected therapeutic exercise program only, while the study group performed the same selected therapeutic exercise program and incentive spirometry training. Children in both groups received training five times per week for a period of one month. Forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at one second and peak expiratory flow were assessed before and after the training period. Both groups showed non significant difference at the beginning of the study (P > 0.05). The control group showed non significant changes in measured ventilatory functions after training (P > 0.05), while significant improvements in measured ventilatory functions were observed after training in the study group (P < 0.05). In the control group, the percent of decrease of FVC, FEV1 and PEF were 0.65%, 2.26% and 1.11 % respectively
