Abstract

Background and Aims: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are post transcriptional regulators of gene expression. Their discovery and functional understanding have only been uncovered in the past ten years. Long pri- miRNAs are transcribed from the genome and processed into premiRNAs by Dicer; and then into short single stranded mature miRNAs complexed with Argonaute proteins to inhibit protein translation. The first link of miRNAs to cancer was made only relatively recently, but the field has expanded exponentially since. In this study we aim to detect the level of miRNA-29b-2, -155, -197, and -205 in metastatic and non-metastatic breast cancer patients and comparing the results with normal females, also detect change in level of miRNA-29b-2, -155, -197, and -205 at different T stages, N stages, with type of the tumor and the site of metastasis. Results: there was significant upregulation in level of miRNA-29b-2, - 155, -197 and -205 in breast cancer cases. Also there is high statistical significant difference between N2 and N3 as well as between T2 and T3 in breast cancer cases, being higher in N3 and T3 cases. Conclusion: we concluded that our chosen micro-RNAs were upregulated in breast cancer; also their expression was higher in more advanced cases
