Abstract

Background: The prevalence of obesity in Egypt in 2008 is 33.1%;21.4% among males & 44.5% among females . Despite the importance of this health issue, published data about the relation between obesity, arterial stiffness & left ventricular mass index among apparently healthy adult Egyptians is lacking. Objective:This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of increased arterial stiffness, left ventricular mass index, left ventricular &atrial dimensions, as well as diastolic function in obese versus non-obese Egyptian adults. Results: The aortic distensibility was lower in group (A) than group (B) [mean= 4.16 ± 1.80 vs.5.58 ± 3.15 (cm2dyne-110-6)respectively, p-value=0.007]. The carotid Ý stiffness index was higher in group (A) than group (B) [mean= 6.53 ± 2.18 vs. 5.37± 1.65 respectively, p-value=0.005]. The carotid PWV was higher in group (A) than group (B) [mean= 6.05 ± 1.14 vs. 5.24± 0.89 (m/s) respectively, p- value {u2264} 0.001]. group (A) showed 4 cases of increased LVM when indexed to body surface area with a prevalence of 8% while group (B) showed none. When LVM was indexed to height2.7, group (A) showed 15 cases of LVH with prevalence of 30%; with 5 cases of concentric LVH (33.3%) & 10 cases of eccentric LVH (66.7%). group (A) has statistically significant larger left atrial linear dimension than group(B),with a mean of 3.41±0.51 cm versus 3.09±0.38 cm respectively. In this study, group(A)has shown early diastolic dysfunction when compared to group(B) in the form of statistically significantly higher peak late diastolic {uFB01}lling (A-wave) velocities, lateral &septal A’ as well as lateral &septal E’/A’
