Abstract

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is an imaging diagnostic method based that allows non-invasive measurement of metabolites in tissues. There are a number of metabolites that can be identified by standard brain proton MRS but only a few of them has a clinical significance in diagnosis of gliomas including N-acetylaspartate, choline, creatine, myo-inositol, lactate, and lipids. ResultS: The spectrum of most patients with brain gliomas included in this study showed choline in addition to creatine, N-acetylaspartate, lactate, lipid and myoinositol. Choline was detected in most patients with all grades of glioma with P value 0.002 in addition to lipids or lactate in 2 patients which was nonspecific with P values 0.174 and 0.06 respectively. There were significant differences between the Cho/Cr ratios with P value 0.004 between grades of glioma which showed significant rise with higher grades (grade IV) than grade I, II AND III while no statistically significant difference was found as regards the NAA/Cr ratio
