المستخلص

Postoperative pain in children is common after tonsillectomy.Rectal acetaminophen has been used effectively for postoperative pain management in small children. The aim of this randomized blind study was to evaluate the prophylactic effect of rectal acetaminophen versus intravenous pethidine on postoperative pain management in children undergoing tonsillectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 100 children, 3 to 10 years, ASA I or II scheduled for elective tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy were recruited for the study.Patients were randomized to receive either rectal acetaminophen 30-40 mg/kg ”group A” or i.v. pethidine 0.5 mg/kg ”group B” after induction of general anesthesia. The postoperative pain was assessed using face, legs, activity, cry and consolability scale (FLACC) for the first 6 hours. The need for rescue analgesic, intramuscular ketorolac 0.5 mg/kg, was recorded also after surgery
