Abstract

The aim of our study was to compare the sensitivity and predictive value of both serum visfatin and urinary adiponectin for increased common carotid artery intima-media-thickness and determine which of these two markers is a more valid and cheaper mean for early detection of sub-clinical atherosclerosis This study was performed on 60 type 2 diabetic patients divided into two equal groups according to the presence or absence of carotid atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic burden was assessed by quantification of common carotid artery intima-media-thickness (IMT) through ultrasound measurement. The degree of glycemic control and multiple cardiovascular risk factors were assessed in all groups in addition to serum visfatin and urinary adiponectin. The results of our study established that serum visfatin exceeded urinary adiponectin and was highly correlated to increase CIMT and was the only significant predictor in the model explaining 65 % of the variability in CIMT
