Abstract

The management of building design phases might be one of the most challenging forms of management as it involves managing both outputs as drawings and creative mind. In the case of tall building design, the design management of encounters even more challenges and problems due to the complexity and the increase of the design aspects of such building type. The main criteria of success of any project concerning the design phase are to reach to a design that meets the client’s needs and reduces the waste as much as possible while keeping in mind the different design aspects and respecting the design regulations, these criteria are very compatible with the lean management main principles which are increasing a project added value with minimum waste.
This research aims at improving the design management process of tall buildings by applying lean management principles in order to develop a framework which is more efficient than the traditional design management process applied nowadays. The research methodology can be considered as a Descriptive Analytical methodology. First, a literature review was performed to define the tall buildings design challenges and the how the traditional design management deal with these challenges, and to also determine the appropriate lean management principles to be applied to the design management and how lean management proved to be successful when applied in various and numerous fields. Second, a Survey was conducted to determine the efficiency level of traditional design management and the awareness of lean management principles to the design managers and practitioners. Third, a framework was developed for the application of lean management principles to the design management process in tall buildings, defining the proper lean tools and techniques that can add value to the design process of a tall building.
The research has indicated that the application of lean management principles to the design management process of tall buildings results in significant improvements in the management process which leads to more successful designs and more satisfied clients in the future.
