Abstract

Skin diseases are among the most common health problems in dogs. The study aimed to
determine the relationship between antioxidant trace elements (zinc, Copper and Selenium)
and some dermatological disorders in dogs. The present work included 98 dogs which
divided into 2 groups. Control group (20 apparently healthy dogs) and diseased group
(78dog). All dogs were clinically examined; blood samples were collected from cephalic
vein for estimation of CBC, ALT, GGT, BUN, Creatinine, Thyroid profile FT4, TSH,
Cortisol and trace elements (zinc, Cu and selenium) .diseased dogs were subjected to skin
scraping examination, biopsies from skin lesions were obtained for histopathological
examination. Skin scraping revealed mites (Sarcoptes scabiei and demodex canis)
infestation. Also, ectothrix and endothrix spores of dermatophytes were detected.
Histopathological examination revealed various changes in epidermis as well as dermal layer
in different dermopathies. Results showed significant differences in hemato-biochemical
parameters in all diseased groups. However significant decreased in anti-oxidant trace
elements (zinc, copper and Selenium) in all diseased groups compared to control group.
Conclusion: The study revealed that dermatological infection contributes in stress-related
skin diseases and represents a stress factor in dogs affecting its antioxidant mechanism
system, consequently antioxidant trace elements level.
Recommendation: 1-it is recommend cutaneous biopsy for histopathological examination,
it is a semiquanone to reach a definite and final diagnosis .2- With regard to serum
antioxidant trace elements, our figures are so far the first in this context .It, however,
necessitates further studies .3- We recommend the use of combined formulation of the
antioxidant trace elements (zinc, copper and Selenium) epsofacto for treatment.
