Abstract This thesis seeks to answer a major research question: What is the relative weight of oil and gas security among Italian foreign policy interests towards the Libyan conflict since 2011? In order to answer this question, the researcher relied on two theoretical contributions by: ”Catherine Gegout” in her book entitled: ”Why Europe Intervenes in Africa: Security Prestige and the Legacy of Colonialism”. As for the second contribution, it is for ”Benjamin O. Fordham” in his study entitled: ”Power or Plenty? Economic Interests, Security Concerns, and American Intervention”. Moreover, the researcher relied on the rational choice method in making foreign policy, and the group approach by looking at the effective role of the Italian energy company, ENI, in making Italian foreign policy. In the framework of this, data and information were collected in this study through primary and secondary sources, as well as the interview method with a number of scientific and practical specialists, including Egyptian, Libyan, and Italian researchers and diplomats. The thesis found that the interest of traditional energy sources security exchanged the seat of the most important interest for Italy toward the Libyan conflict with the interest of combating irregular immigration during the conflict period which was analyzed in this thesis. |
