Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks as the third most common malignancy for men and the second most common malignancy for women worldwide . Moreover, CRC remains as the fourth most common malignancy-associated mortality globally.
Several studies showed that cholecystectomy could be a risk factor for developing colorectal carcinoma, so we aimed at our study to detect cholecystectomy as a possible risk factor for colorectal carcinoma and if also it affects the overall survival of the patients .
This retrospective case control study had been carried out on two groups:
group A(cases) included 65 patients had colorectal carcinoma (CRC) which were further divided into 2 subgroups: group A1 included 34 patients with history of cholecystectomy and group A2 included 31 patients with no history of cholecystectomy. group B (control) of 65 patients without colorectal carcinoma (CRC), the data was collected from files from October 2019 to October 2022 .
These patients were selected from the patients attending the Endoscopy unit of Internal Medicine department of Menoufia University and Clinical Oncology Department, Menoufia University
The study revealed that regarding history of cholecystectomy there was a statistically significant difference between cases and controls (P value= 0.002) meaning that cholecystectomy increase the risk for colorectal carcinoma
