Abstract

Although the conventional sulfur oxide (SOx) removal
technologies merit from their large-scale implementation,
they are quite energy-intensive. Regarding this point of
view, the development of low-cost, less energy-intensive
strategies are highly demanded. Recently, the visible light
photocatalytic approaches gained great attention from
scientists due to the efficient catalytic performance under
mild conditions. In this study, we aimed to develop an
efficient method for removing flue gas contaminants by
solving energy and cost problems. TiO2 nanoparticles
(TiO2NPs) and TiO2 nanoclusters (TiO2NCs) were
synthesized and tested for the transformation of SO2 gas to
beneficial material. By adding thymol or naphthol to the
reaction mixture, the results showed that TiO2 nanoclusters
exhibited higher catalytic activity than TiO2 nanoparticlesand sulfonated compounds were obtained in quantitative
yields. In addition, the SO2 gas concentration was reduced
from 10 ppm to 60 ppb after 10 min under visible light
irradiation. The photocatalytic removing rate of SO2 gas with
TiO2 nanoclusters is higher than using TiO2 nanoparticles
due to its high surface area. It was indicated that the newly
developed protocol has several advantages regarding the
formation of new sulfonated organic compounds and the
mitigation effect of SO2 gas.
