Abstract

Aim: The study’s aim is to assess the impact of surface treatment of PEEK surface using
Aluminum oxide particles with different air blasting pressures on the PEEK’s surface roughness and
bond strength to adhesive resin cement
Methodology: A total of 24 PEEK samples were prepared. The samples were randomly
divided into three test groups (n = 8) according to the used air abrasion pressure, all the samples
were air blasted with 110 μm Al2O3 particles for 10 seconds at a distance of 10 mm and pressure
according to the group. group A: 3 bar, group B: 2.5 bar and group C: 3.5 bar. The samples
were cleaned with dry air and the adhesive agent (Visio link, Bredent, Germany), was applied and
cured according to the manufacturer then self-adhesive resin cement (G-CEM, GC company, Japan)
was applied in a customized mould and cured. Surface roughness was measured by SEM and
optical profilometer, shear bond strength was measured using universal testing machine and EDX
analysis was done to one sample of each group.
Results: Statistical analysis showed that, regarding the surface roughness, roughness
average (Ra) increased by increasing air abrasion pressure, group B was significantly the lowest (P
< 0.05), while there was insignificant difference between other groups (P > 0.05). Regarding shear
bond strength: group A recorded (12.6864 ± 2.486 MPa), group B (11.2842 ± 1.555 MPa) and
group C (10.1024 ± 2.317 MPa), there was significantly statistical difference between Groups A &
C (P < 0.05). The failure mode observed in group C was mainly adhesive while that in groups A &
B was mixed
Conclusion: Increasing the air blasting pressure of PEEK surface treatment up to 3 bar
pressure increases the surface roughness and shear bond strength between the PEEK and resin
cement, but more than 3 bar pressure the surface roughness obtained is unfavorable and causes a
decrease in the shear bond strength. So, it’s recommended to use 3 bar pressure for the air blasting
of the fitting surface of PEEK restorations before cementation with resin cement.
