Abstract

Aim of the study is to to address the efficacy of applying Negative pressure therapy with instillation on burn wounds. This prospective randomized control Split case clinical study was conducted on 20 patients in Minia University Hospital who underwent NPWTi dressing over study part and regular occlusive dressing over control part.
The main results of the study revealed that:
The current study included 20 patients; 15 of the cases were males (75 %) while five of the cases were females (25 %). Their age ranged from 2 years to 49 years.
thirteen (65 %) cases were acute burn while seven (35 %) were delayed burns.
one case (5 %) was superficial partial, nine (45 %) were superficial partial to deep partial, seven cases (35 %) were deep partial and three (15 %) cases were full thickness. Five cases (25 %) were flame burn, fourteen (70 %) cases were scald burn and one case (5 %) was electric burn.
NPWTi can reduce the number of dressing changes for patients while improving management and healing time.
NPWTi has now proven by our study in our biopsy results that it exhibits signs of re-epithelization by forming new blood capillaries and reducing inflammatory response and inflammatory exudates in tissue thus leading to early wound healing.
Time of healing in study group ranged from 7 to 22 days while control group from 11 to 26 days with significant p -value of <0.001
Method of healing was by 2ry intention in 16 cases in study group only 4 cases healed by grafting while in control group 11 cases healed by 2ry intention and 9 cases were grafted.
After one month in all of cases in study part pain & itching were markedly reduced. Stiffness, thickness and irregularity were barely noticed with significant p -value of <0.001.
Based on our results we recommend further studies on larger scale of patients and longer period of follow up to emphasize our conclusion.
