Abstract

An integrated treatment system was designed, starting with a mechanical treatment stage using a chosen medium, which was gravel, followed by the biological treatment stage, in which four different media were used, which were activated carbon, rice straw, banana peel and plastic beads. The resulting ammonia concentrations were 5.00, 9.72, 5.50 and 10.80 mg/l with a removal efficiency of 80.00, 61.12, 78.00 and 56.80 %, respectively. Activated carbon was the best medium for biofilter. The best hydraulic retention time that had the greatest ability to remove ammonia was 20 min with a medium dose of 15 gm of activated carbon per liter of wastewater. Also, the same experiments were conducted using rice straw as a medium for biofilter. While the best HRT that had the greatest ability to remove ammonia was 30 min with a medium dose of 20 gm of rice straw per liter of wastewater.
