Abstract
Global research investigates many urban agendas related to different lost spaces in cities. The urban fabric in Egypt is changing at a fast pace, in order to meet the needs of the society. This acceleration is creating many residual spaces that are underutilized. This thesis tackles the investigation of in-between spaces of Downtown Cairo as an old historical district and Obour city as a new urban community. It analyses how the organization of in-between spaces affects social interaction in different urban forms, by examining the possible ways of employing “Tactical Urbanism” principles to attain optimal utilization for the shared spaces.
This thesis aims to provide a clear framework for utilizing the residual in-between spaces that catalyses social interaction within the urban context, by revisiting the principles of tactical urbanism to be applied in the Egyptian context. An integrated mixed research approach is used in the empirical study. On two main pillars, the study is built. The qualitative study of the chosen case studies forms the first pillar which is based on the non-participant snapshot observation and semi-structured open-ended interviews with academics, experts, and users of the space. Using a survey designed using google forms and sent to 277 respondents through social media, the results from IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) statistics used a descriptive exploratory approach by choosing a random sample collected and considering the conclusion reached from reviewing the literature.
The concluded remarks highlighted the effect of two factors; physical, human factors on the people’s needs and perceptions to enhance social interaction. The empirical data investigation of the participants’ perception tried to better understand how the in-between spaces users utilize the principles of tactical urbanism to fulfil the users’ needs through a better-designed spaces. Future studies could rely on studying the other types of in-between spaces. In addition to other theoretical frameworks may be tested against tactical urbanism to realise the full potential of underutilised urban areas.
