Abstract

As everything develops, demands in practice codes ripen, denoting that previously designed structure sections were insufficient demanding rehabilitation or retrofitting. Reinforced concrete bridge piers are one of these structural members, as most of the bridges used daily were designed to lower seismic demands compared to the used one in the new codes of practice. This research focuses on assessing the impact of RC jacketing on the seismic performance of skewed bridge piers. Presented in that research, a parametric study of two pier heights and five skew angles generating ten disparate nonlinear 3D Beam Stick models (BS). Foremost, Eigenvalue analysis is executed to determine the modal properties of each model. Then, nonlinear pushover curves are constructed to calculate piers’ capacities and ductilities. Next, nonlinear time history analysis (THA) using eight earthquake records scaled to the design response spectrum which is presented in the ECP 201-2012 is used to assess the reached damage state. Finally, RC jackets are added to bridge piers to evaluate the significance of enhancing the piers’ shear capacities and ductilities. Concluding, RC jacketing produces better lateral performance behavior under the effect of seismic loads.
