Abstract

This research studies the relation between urban growth patterns and cultural heritage sites. Ground theory approach was used to fill the gap of knowledge in this area. This process assisted in identifying categories, properties, themes, and relationships between urban growth and cultural heritage sites. Which eventually helped in building a cohesive understanding of the main driving forces affecting urban growth on cultural heritage sites in Egypt. Results revealed a significant growth of urban growth in Giza zone in the first period from 2003–2013 by 59.46% and 5.95% annually. Increased amount of growth can be related to the high accessibility of the study zone as it is highly connected to major roads, adding to that the availability of agricultural land. These two factors contributed significantly to the amount of growth. Results also showed that local government policies enforcement regarding implementing building requirements are of low significance with 6.04%. Research used TerrSett programme to predict the future urban growth patterns scenarios in study area till 2050. Provided results showed that, computer modelling can be used as a proactive method in managing urban growth; also, semi attached CHS to urban fabric are in an immense need for protection, therefore, using these models can be used to mitigate the future hazards of urban growth.
