Abstract Hepatic nodules in Budd Chiari Syndrome patients represent a diagnostic dilemma that needs integration of various clinical and diagnostic procedures to reach the accurate diagnosis. With the presence of current diagnostic imaging modalities, it was possible to characterize various hepatic focal lesions with good sensitivity and specificity. In this study, imaging with triphasic CT and/or dynamic MRI was found to provide useful data, that helped to reach a final clinical diagnosis or ruled out suspicion of malignancy in patients Budd Chiari Syndrome who have hepatic focal lesions. Combination of imaging with AFP levels increased the sensitivity of detection of early HCC in such patients. In conclusion, imaging was particularly useful in differentiating benign from malignant nodules in BCS patients. A combination imaging with post contrast triphasic CT or dynamic MRI and AFP serum level appears to be very helpful to discriminate benign lesions from HCCs and could play a central role in the follow-up strategy in patients with BCS-related nodules. |
