Abstract

Supercritical CO2 extraction technology intending to explore its potential for the dewaxing/scouring of gray cotton fabric for improving wettability and obtain a level of dyeing. Several methods of extraction and removal of cotton impurities in supercritical CO2 were carried on. The EB irradiation technology was investigated for cotton surface modification for effective improvement in functionality without changing the bulk characteristics of fibers. Other focuses included in this thesis are the dyeability of cotton fabric after treatment with EB irradiation and supercritical CO2.
It was shown that dewaxing in supercritical CO2 dominantly improved the water wettability of grey cotton fabric as compared to alkali water scoring, with less fabric loss. Exposing the fabric to EB irradiation beforehand caused degradation of the hydrophobic impurities with a high molecular weight that enhanced the removal of wax and pectin in supercritical CO2 with less chemical additives and shorter time of treatment, in addition, EB irradiation increased the levelness of dyed fabric and obtained good fastness properties. With the results achieved, sufficient scouring of grey cotton fabric can be obtained by using EB irradiation and supercritical CO2 as well as good dyeability of the treated fabric.
