Abstract
Failed back surgery syndrome is a widely described chronic pain condition which has a negative impact on the patients’ quality of life and daily activities with an evidenced effect on chronic use and abuse of opioid analgesic medications.
As we presented in the results of our study, it was established that spinal cord stimulation is an effective modality of treatment for the cases of failed back surgery syndrome with a statistically significant reduction in pain scores and a significant improvement in functional capacity and quality of life. Also, it has a recognizable but not statistically significant reduction in opioid analgesic medications that is affected by the presence of previously diagnosed painful conditions.
We proposed that spinal cord stimulation is a procedure with a reliable safety profile as detected with the recorded post procedure complications.
However, due to the limitations we experienced in our study specially the high cost of the device nationally, we recommend that more randomized controlled trials are needed for more generalization of the results of assessment of quality of life with more detailed questionnaires, also, more detailed assessment of post procedure opioids consumption specially in patients with prior painful conditions and substance use history.
