Abstract group A streptococcus (GAS) is a common cause of acute pharyngitis, resulting in more than 10 million physician visits each year, and it is very important to prove the diagnosis of pharyngitis with GAS to determine the need for using the antibiotic, to prevent the possible complication and also to hasten symptom resolution, reduce the transmission of GAS in the community while limiting the use of antibiotics in virus-mediated infections. The aim of the present study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of QuStickTM Strep A Rapid Test of GAS pharyngitis and to detect the effect of clinical spectrum and inoculum size on its performance; also, to detect the frequency of Streptococcuspyogenes among pediatric patients presented with acute pharyngitis who attended outpatient clinics in Abo-El Rish Hospital. Throat swab samples were collected from 100 patients suffering from acute pharyngitis. Specimens were cultured and the isolates were identified by conventional microbiological methods.
