Abstract

In the present study, rats were administered three levels of cd2+ in combination with zn2+, selenite, epicatechine, vitamins C or E, as protective factors, five times per week for 21 days. Cadmium induced renal failure, bone resorption, oxidative stress, hepatic disorder and alterations of lipid metabolism. Zinc, epicatechina, vitamins C or E ameliorated the elevated serum levels of urea and increased the lowered values of Ý2- macroglobulin (Ý2-MG) and the activity of N{u2013}acetyl-Ý-D- glucosaminidase activity has declined. Serum levels of alanine amino peptidase activity have not been improved by Zn, Se or antioxidants. All the used antioxidants and zinc significantly decreased the elevated levels of carboxy-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type -1 collagen (ctx-1) by different percentage. The organic antioxidants in addition to zinc and Se had a protective role against cadmium-induced lipid peroxidation restored the lowered values of glutathione peroxidase activity in serum. The elevated levels of malonaldehyde were decreased by zinc only. Liver function tests showed hepatic disorders due to cadmium toxicity, that improved by antioxidants and zinc. The disturbance in lipid metabolism was also protected.
