Abstract

Anesthetic gaseous agents are chemical compounds used to induce unconsciousness to patients in the OR to render them asleep and unaware in order to allow surgeons to perform painless procedures. The use of anesthetic gases was started in 1842. Now the most commonly used agents are Halothane, Enflurane, Isoflurane and sevoflurane. These are chemically halogenated hydrocarbons whose biotransformation, bioavailability and metabolites and effect on end organs vary. Nitrous Oxide is also a good analgesic for pain relief during childbirth and some dental procedures. It has been noticed that the use of such compounds might be related to some adverse health problems to the operating room personnel including physicians, nurses and workers. The problem was first observed with nurses who have had spontaneous abortion. Later, various chromosomal studies investigated effects of anesthetic gases among health care professionals. Studies related the frequency of adverse effects to the frequency of exposure and linked it to the increased concentration of wasted anesthetics in operating room atmosphere that might result from leakage from anesthetic machine or inadequate removal of waste gases via the scavenging systems of the OR. Reported health problems are serious and vary in severity and frequency of occurrence, and include mainly fatigue, headache, dizziness and memory problems together with reproductive health problems, genotoxicity, hepatic dysfunction, and renal function derangement.
