Abstract

This is a retrospective study that carried on eighty six cases diagnosed as invasive duct carcinoma at the pathology department, National cancer institute (NCI), Cairo University, during the period from January 2009 to December 2010. The cases were classified into Luminal A, Luminal B, HER - 2enriched and TNBC. Classification was done by using immuncohistochemistry (ER, PR, HER2 / neu and Ki - 67). Immunostaining for CD44 was done for all cases. Then obtained results were correlated with clinico-pathologic variables as well as 3 years DFS and 3 years overall survival. Cases were categorized into; luminal A, luminal B, HER - 2 enriched and triple negative, representing 16.3%, 33.7%, 23.3% and 26.7%, respectively. 32.6% of cases were positive to CD44 expression in tumor cells and 34.9% of cases were positive to CD44 expression in stromal cells. Nodal metastasis, TNM staging, anatomic stage are strong worse factor for prognosis; Also DFS estimates and OS estimates were significantly associated with hormonal status, HER - 2 status, and different breast subtypes, being worst among HER - 2 enriched subtype. Regarding CD44 expression, it was found that CD44 expression in tumor cells is not significantly associated with DFS and OS, in contrast to CD44 expression in stromal cells, where CD44 negative cases achieved better DFS and OS than CD44 positive cases
