Abstract
VAP is the leading cause of death among hospital-acquired infections, exceeding the rate of death due to central line infections, severe sepsis, and respiratory tract infections in the non-intubated patient. Perhaps the most concerning aspect of VAP is the high rate of associated mortality.VAP preventive bundle is a series of evidenced-based interventions related to ventilator care that, when implemented together , will achieve significantly better outcomes in reducingVAP ratesthan when implemented individually.The Institute for Healthcare Improvement ( IHI) bundle includes the following components: Elevation of the head of the bed (HOB) ,Daily sedation vacations and assessment of readiness to extubate ,Peptic ulcer disease prophylaxis ,Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis ,Daily oral care with chlorhexidine .The aim of this study was to assess the value of implementing VAP preventive bundle in reducing the rate of VAP in mechanically ventilated children in pediatric intensive care unit PICU.The study was carried out on 117 patients who were admitted in the PICU on mechanical ventilation for at least 2 calendar days, Pediatrics Department at EL-AHRAR teaching hospital and Zagazig University hospitalfrom May 2016 - February 2017.
