Abstract

T
his study was conducted on 44 individuals who met the inclusion criteria and had one level lumbar discectomy or fixation were included in the study. divided them into 2 equal groups with no statistical difference between in them as regards their demographic data.
group C: (control group) patients received standard general anesthesia for lumbar spine surgery according to hospital protocol.
group E: as in control group but they received bilateral ultrasound guided erector spinae block before the lumbar spine surgery started.
Postoperative narcotic (morphine) consumption was compared between the 2 groups, with a significantly higher consumption in control group.
Postoperative pain assessment in the form of numerical rating score (NRS) was compared between the 2 groups. There was a higher significant value in NRS in control group in comparison to ESPB group till 18 hours postoperatively while there was no significant difference afterwards till the first 24 hours of the study.
Postoperative 1st mobilization to chair was compared between the 2 groups. There was statistical difference between them with higher value in control group
Postoperative vital data in the form of mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and heart rate (HR) were compared between the 2 groups. There was no statistical difference between them all over the study period.
The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) was compared between the 2 groups. There was no statistical difference between them with higher value in C group.
Patient satisfaction was compared between the 2 groups. There was statistical difference between them with higher satisfaction among ESPB group.
