Abstract

Solid waste cause an environmental and health problems. The emphasis in modern solid waste management is on reduction, reuse, and recovery prior to disposal. Solid waste management is the systematic administration of activities that provide for the collection, source separation, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal of solid waste.
The main aim of the study was to assess KAP of Alexandria university students regarding solid waste management. Also, the aims included measuring the possible determinant of student practice regarding solid waste management. To fulfill this objective, 606 students from eight faculties were included.
The results of the present study revealed that:
• Concerning the gender, female respondents’ percentage (63.4%) was higher than male respondents’ percentage (36.6%).
• As regards the family income, the highest percentage (53.8%) of respondents’ monthly income was sufficient
• The highest percentage of the study sample (54%) were from high socioeconomic status, while (41%) of the studied population were from moderate SES, and only (5%) were from low SES.
• The majority of the studied sample (92.6%) knew that improper management of SW may affect resident’s health negatively, while (90.4%) of them were aware that SW can be used for other useful purposes.
• High percentage of the students (83.2%) was aware that uncovered bins are improper way of dealing with SWM.
• The majority of the students (87.5%) knew the importance of proper SWM in limiting infectious diseases.
• Nearly two thirds of the sample (65.3%) knew the effectiveness of recycling in reducing the amount of SW.
• High percentage of students (88.9%) was aware that SW separation bins can facilitate SWM process.
• Low percentage of students (37.1%) knew that compost can produced from SW.
• The study revealed that the majority of the students (77.7%) strongly agreed about putting SW in its specific bins.
• About two fifths (39.6%) of the students agreed that reducing their consumption helps in minimizing the amount of SW.
• The majority of the students (74.3%) strongly agreed about feeling bad whenever they see SW dumped in the street.
• Most of students (72.3%) strongly agreed that the university administration should play a role in raising awareness between students about SWM.
• High percentage of students (91%) search for covered bins to put their SW
• Most of students (74.2%) separate solid waste if they find material separation bins
• About two thirds of the students (64.9%) stated that they lessen their consumption in order to reduce the amount of waste sometimes
• More than two thirds of the students (68.5%) choose products that their packages are environment friendly
• About three quarters of the students (70.8%) reuse materials if it is possible
• More than two thirds of the students (72.6%) reduce using plastic bags whenever they find an environment friendly alternative
6.2 Conclusion
• The finding of this study indicated that students’ knowledge and attitude of SWM are high, but the level of practice is moderate.
• There is a need to enlighten the students by the importance of reducing their consumption in minimizing the amount of SW.
• Student’s family income and parents’ employment have been found to have no association with KAP. It was also shown that students attitude have a statistically association with their fathers’ education. The study showed that the students’ age is associated with students’ knowledge. It was also found that the gender of students is associated with their attitude.
• There was a significant positive moderate correlation between knowledge and attitude, and significant positive weak correlation between knowledge and practice, and between attitude and practice.
• Attitude and the type of college (practical/ theoretical) were the predictors of practice towards SWM
6.3 Recommendations
• Environmental health education program should be planned and implemented for university students about SWM.
• The students’ knowledge levels were high, the correlation between knowledge and practice was weak, so awareness should go a step beyond being informative but including motivation for maintaining SWM practices.
