Abstract

Radiation protection is one of the most important branches of radiation science and its importance lies in the study of the hazard effect due to exposure to radiation, and this study aimed to the impact of knowledge and awareness of radiation workers on occupational radiation health hazard
Starting with the definition of radiation and the multiple fields and practical applications that include the occupational radiation protection and then the health effects of occupational exposure to radiation including the deterministic effect and the stochastic effect of exposure depending on the amount of radiation dose and the time of exposure for radiation worker.
The probability of induced cancer and heredity diseases, according to the dose as well as direct healthy effects due to exposed to certain dose. It also included the correct scientific foundations for radiation worker including the principles of radiation protection and includes; justification of practices, optimization of protection and dose limitation for individuals.
As well as how radiation worker use personal protective equipment and its personal dosimeter during work, and radiological survey of the place, and its knowledge about the occupational annual maximum radiation doses limits exposed and the doses limits for pregnant radiation working.
The rate of periodic medical examinations for radiation workers and keeping of these records and the training courses in the field of occupational radiation protection and radiation exposure.
All the previous points were formulated in a set of questions in the form of multiple Choice questions, in a questionnaire according to the correct scientific criteria for the development of scientific questionnaires written in Arabic and English to facilitate the participation in this questionnaire, which targeted two main categories:
First: Medical Workers: physicians - Physicists - Technicians - Nurses, in the fields of diagnostic radiology, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine
Second: Workers in the academic and research field: researchers - technicians, in the departments that study radiological and nuclear sciences as well as the research laboratories of those departments.
This questionnaire was filled anonymously in accordance with the principles of ethics of scientific research. The answers to these questionnaires were subjected to statistical analysis in preparation for reaching the results of that study using statistical programs.
The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions concerning personal data and 60 core questions in two categories; the first 40 questions about radiation protection and the last 20 about their knowledge in radiation and radioactivity and hazardous effect of exposed to radiation according to their work.
The results concluded that radiation workers in the medical field are the most group in need of raising the level of knowledge and awareness of the hazards effect of occupational exposure to radiation, which is subject to a license from the Ministry of Health and Population.
The results were unsatisfactory in compliance with the rules of occupational radiation protection developed by international institutions such as the International commission of Radiation Protection, the International Commission of Radiation Units and Measurements, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The results of radiation workers in the research field are better than the other category, which may be related to licensing from the EAEA.
