Abstract

Aim: the aim of the study was to evaluate of the efficacy of customized polyetheretherketone implants in reconstruction of orbitozygomatic defects. Material and methods: Between 2013 and 2015, 7 patients (1female and 5 males) underwent orbital or zygomatic reconstruction with insertion of customized PEEK implants. Computer-assisted preoperative planning was done by the surgeon and the devices were fabricated by two methods, 2 implants fabricated by milling method and the other 4 implants by injection molding method. Five patients had posttraumatic zygomatic defects and one patient had orbital floor defect. All patients underwent esthetic examination and radiological evaluation during the preoperative and follow-up periods. The follow-up period ranged from 6 months till 2 years. Results: The position and the shape of all implants were satisfactory. Fitting of the implant during surgery required minor adaptation in 4 cases and no modifications in the other two cases. Postoperative wounds healed perfectly in 5 cases with no complications and one case only required implant removal. Post-operative clinical assessment and CT data revealed high implant adaptation and good aesthetic outcomes in the five patients. Conclusion: Peek implants allow optimum reconstruction in patients with orbitozygomatic defects providing good cosmetic and functional results with operative time reduction and avoidance of donor site morbidity
