Abstract

Rectal Prolapse is a common disease in children living in tropical and developing countries, and it is the reason for about 2% of the attendance at pediatric gastroenterology clinic. In many cases it is difficult to define the primary cause which led to rectal prolapse. Although cystic fibrosis is considered one of the important etiological factor in pathogenesis of such condition in western population, but this not the case in our community, where gastroenteritis and parasitic infestation, particularly enterobiasis and amoebiasis, are often considered as a common association with rectal prolapse. Different treatment modalities are available for the management of rectal prolapse and it is not easy to find out the best method of treatment. Many cases may respond to conservative measures, some cases may need major surgical intervention, but submucosal injection of different sclerosing materials is a safe and simple modality that can be used for children not responding to conservative measures and also for complicated cases. Injection sclerotherapy is one of the commonly used modalities for treatment of partial rectal prolapse in children. Various materials are available for such injection, but each has its advantage and complications. Comparing between 98% ethyl alcohol and phenol in almond oil 5% used in the treatment of such pathology form the basis of this study trying to define the best material with the least complications
