Abstract

Research on the early detection of the autism spectrum disorder has recently focused on the analysis of the speech characteristics of verbal and non-verbal children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their power of discriminability between high risk and low risk groups of children. The current study will investigate the speech characteristics of verbal and non-verbal Egyptian autistic children as early linguistic markers of ASD compared to those of children with typical development (TD). The major objective is to develop a speech characteristic profile of autistic children. This profile is based on the analysis of the phonetic-acoustic and phonological characteristics of their vocal productions. Vocal stimuli from children with ASD and TD are acoustically and phonologically analyzed using a variety of methods involving formal and informal testing and with the aid of instrumental tools of analysis. Findings of the current study support the sensitivity of the speech analysis – whether phonetic-acoustic or phonological – as an effective linguistic tool for the early detection, identification and assessment of children at risk of ASD from a purely linguistic and phonetic points of view.
