Abstract

The thesis presents a contrastive cognitive-stylistic analysis of dystopian fiction. Being realistic and prophetic, dystopian fiction plays an important role in unraveling current social and political issues and highlighting their potential dangers. The study focuses on two contemporary dystopian novels published in the same year in 2008: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Utopia by Dr. Ahmed Khaled Tawfik. Written in two different languages and coming from two different cultures, these novels were selected as each one tackles different issues pertaining to its environment and cultural background. Framed within Text-World Theory and ideological discourse analysis, this research investigates the different mental representations formed during reading dystopian fiction as well as the ideologies of the examined texts. Results show how Text-world Theory accounts for the estranging and immersive effect of reading dystopian fiction as it explains the influential role of conceptual layers in involving readers in the text, as well as interpreting the text’s ideologies through bringing forward the contrast between the real world and the dystopian text-world.
