Abstract

Several Solanum species were found to be very important as natural sources of steroidal alkaloids. Based on the current literature, it was found that meager work was carried out on this species. Accordingly, it was necessary to carry out a phytochemical and pharmacological study of S. distichum fruits. The powdered S. distichum fruits were subjected to proximate and nutritional analysis including determination of moisture, ash, crude fibers, carbohydrate, protein, fat, macro- and micro elements as well as antioxidant vitamins A, C and E. Appropriate published analytical methods were applied. The fruits were rich in crude fibers, potassium, and vitamin A. The quantitative estimation of total phenolic, flavonoid and steroidal content of the total ethanol extract were estimated as 40.43 ± 0. 68 og of gallic acid equivalent/mg, 50.30 ± 0.42 og of quercetin equivalent /mg and 23.52 ± 0.57 og of ursolic acid equivalent /mg respectively. In vitro angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and renin inhibitory activity showed that n-butanol and chloroform fractions are the most active two fractions among tested fractions. Ý-sitosterol and stigmasterol-O-glycoside were isolated from chloroform fraction, while khasianine, solamargine, indioside A and indioside F were isolated from n-butanol fraction. This is the first report on the ACE and renin inhibitory activity of Ý-sitosterol, stigmasterol-O-glycoside, khasianine, solamargine, indioside A, and indioside F
