Abstract

Background: Many complications developed as a result of unplanned intraoperative hypothermia which includes post anesthesia shivering and wound infection. Aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of induced normothermia on occurrence of post anesthetic shivering and wound infection among patients undergoing abdominal surgeries. Research design: A quasi{u2013}experimental design (posttest control group design) Sample: A convenient sample consists of 60 adult male and female patients undergone abdominal surgery (hernia repair or open cholecystectomy) at El Manial University Hospital was recruited. Tools for data collection Demographic and medical data Questioner, Bedside shivering assessment scale, Asepsis wound scoring system, and Tympanic electronic thermometer Results: it was revealed that 70% of control group have hypothermia after 90 minute of anesthesia induction with mean (35.47{u00B0} C ±.761 {u00B0} C). The use of warm fluid is effective in keeping patient normothermic in operation less than two hours (p{u2550} .000) under controlled room temperature (p =.03). Study group have less occurrence of post anesthesia shivering with (p=.016) and surgical wound infection with (p{u2550} .035) so the research hypotheses was supported Recommendation Replication of the study on larger probability sample selected from different geographical areas in Egypt is recommended to obtain more generalizable data
