Abstract

Probiotics have been widely explored in food processing,
production, research and disease prevention, therefore, the present
study was conducted to evaluate the effect of two regimen diet
including high fat diet and basal diet supplemented with Rayeb,
vitamin D and their mixture on obese rats for 8 weeks. The rats
(n=63) were classified into 9 groups, as follows: group (1): fed
on basal diet and kept as negative control group. While the
remainder rats (n= 56) were fed on high fat diet for four weeks to
induce obesity then were divided into eight groups, group (2) was
fed only on high fat diet and served as control positive group.
Groups (3, 4, 5): obese rats were fed on high fat diet and were
given orally 1 ml of fermented milk “Rayeb”, Vitamin D (600
IU/Kg BW), and their mixture respectively. The other obese
groups were continued the experiment on basal diet, as group (6)
was fed only on basal diet and served as control positive group.
Groups (7,8, 9): obese rats were fed on basal diet and were given
orally 1 ml of fermented milk “Rayeb”, Vitamin D at 600 IU/Kg
BW, and their mixture, respectively. The results indicated that,
the supplementation with Rayeb, vitamin D and their mixture
significantly (P<0.05) decreased the final body weight and
VI
BWG% as compared to the positive control group due to lowering
the feed intake and the feed efficiency ratio of the obese rats as
well as improving the liver and kidney functions and lipid profile
of the obese rats. Moreover, the concentration of leptin hormone
and the percent of peritoneal fat bad were significantly (P<0.05)
lowered for all treated groups. On the other hand, the basal diet
supplemented with Vit D and Rayeb significantly (P<0.05)
decreased the body weight more than the high fat diet that
supplemented with the same tested materials. The highest weight
reduction was observed at the group fed on basal diet and
supplemented with a mixture of the tested materials. It could be
concluded that, consumption of fermented milk (Rayeb), vitamin
D and/or their mixture might be useful in weight reduction.
Key words:fermented milk (Rayeb), vitamin D, obesity, weight, liver and
kidney functions.
