Abstract

This investigation conducted in the Plant Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture Saba Basha, Alexandria University, in two successive seasons (January, 2017 and 2018) on carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) cv. ”Big Mama” cut flowers to study the effect of some chemicals and essential oil extracts on keeping quality and vase life of carnation cut flowers. This experiment was factorial with Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD); in two factors (Treatments and dates) for some parameters, with three replicates. Each replicate consisted of one vase in which three cut flowers were placed.
The aims of this study were to:
1. Determine the effectiveness of (Nano-silver, Eucalyptus oil, mint oil and 8 hydroxyqunon) as preservation treatments to reduce Dianthus cut flowers senescence and increase vase life.
2. Find out the most effective concentration among the materials used to produce the best quality with longer vase life
Chemicals used in the experiments of Cut Carnation flowers:
 Control (tap water).
 Nano-silver thiosulphate (NST) at (2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 mg/l).
 Eucalyptus oil at (25, 50 and 75 mg/l).
 Mint oil at (25, 50 and 75 mg/l).
 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (8-HQS) at (250, 300, 350 and 400 mg/l).
The following measurements were taken on flowers in the two experimental seasons on carnation cut flowers: number of bacteria, dry weight and vase life were taken at the end of experiment (one month). Starch, total carbohydrates content, total soluble solids, total sugars and reducing sugars content were taken in (after 5th day, 10th day, 15th day). While chlorophyll, fresh weight and floret diameter of carnation cut flowers at full opening stage [initial time (day 1), 5th day, 10th, 15th and 20th day]. Water uptake and petal water content were taken in (5th day, 10th day, 15th and 20th day).
