Abstract The objective of this study is to propose a decision support system for the water quality management of Bahr El Baqar Drainage System. The implemented system is able to study the technical feasibility analysis for improving the water quality in the drainage system. It is able to control pollution of Bahr El Baqar drainage system and improve water quality along the system for safe reuse of drainage wastewater in irrigation. It also supports the depollution of Lake Manzala and improves the Mediterranean Sea environment. It is used a tool to help decision makers for water quality management and resource allocation in order to achieve designated water quality objectives. The study presented herein consists of seven chapters described as follows: Chapter one includes a definition of the problem that is considered in the study, the study objectives, the study methodology and an illustration of the study contents. Chapter two discusses basic concepts and descriptions of general principles applicable to water quality management and decision support systems. It also includes a study of examples of decision support systems that have been implemented for water quality management of water bodies, with an emphasis on drainage systems. Chapter three explains the methods of analysis for the proposed Decision Support System for Water Quality 153 Management of Bahr El Baqar drainage system. The significance of water quality modelling is discussed in this chapter, which focuses on different types of water quality models and their mathematical principles. Examples of water quality models are presented, with an emphasis on the model chosen for our research and its governing equations. Chapter four provides a detailed overview of Bahr El Baqar drainage system, which is the subject of the case study. It describes the location of the drainage system, as well as its physical characteristics, wastewater sources, and structures. An overview of the new wastewater treatment plant at Bahr El Baqar drainage system is presented. Chapter five discusses the water quality of Bahr El Baqar drainage system and evaluates its suitability for irrigation reuse. This assessment is an important aspect of the water quality management of the system. The existing water quality monitoring system along the Bahr El Baqar drainage system is described and graphing of the water quality data is presented. Chapter six gives a description of the proposed Decision Support System for Water Quality Management of the Bahr El Baqar drainage system. The model system schematization is demonstrated in this chapter and the modelling steps are presented in detail. Scenarios for model management are added and results are displayed and analyzed. Chapter seven summarizes the conclusions that can be taken from the study along with a list of recommendations. |
